Model
The Meckbach Parlor is an exceptionally small, yet fully functional acoustic guitar.
I developed this model in 2016 with the goal of crafting something useful from a large number of rather small pre-cut spruce tops and maple backs that had long been sitting in my wood yard.
Thus, this fine parlor guitar was born, which has since been built in my workshop in a variety of versions.
I built the Parlor offered here in 2019. The instrument was created as part of an artistic collaboration between guitarist Claus Boesser-Ferrari, painter Juan Miguel Restrepo, and myself as the guitar maker and initiator.
History
“Voz del Aire” – The Sound of the Skies: A 170 x 130 cm oil painting by the artist Juan Miguel Restrepo Valdes, in which this handcrafted parlor guitar from Martin Meckbach’s workshop is mounted.
The guitar can be removed from the lockable wall mount to play and then hung back in the painting.
The painting’s main motif, the condor, refers to the painter’s country of origin, Colombia, where, as in many Latin American countries, the bird is of particular significance and often appears as a heraldic animal.
To match the painting’s surface, the guitar is stained black and polished with shellac, which allows the wood structure to show through in certain places, such as the back of the mahogany neck and the flamed maple back and sides.
The rest of the color scheme of the guitar and painting were also coordinated.
Features:
Sound:
It’s always surprising how loud this guitar sounds, despite its small body. Naturally, it produces different tones than larger models, making it ideal for playing alongside other guitars, especially for adding a further color to an ensemble sound. But it’s also a pleasure to play as a comfortable solo instrument with its tight, folky bass, crisp mids, and singing highs.
Condition:
The guitar has been played very little, treated very well, and is in mint condition. Technically, everything works perfectly. From the very beginning, the aesthetics of the guitar, including its lacquer finish, were coordinated with the accompanying oil painting, which is why the lacquer never looked new. The feel was also deliberately designed to be as “hand-friendly” as possible; without knowing its year of manufacture, you wouldn’t guess that it was a new guitar.

The guitar is available for testing in my workshop in Diez an der Lahn.
